Two weeks ago NATO published a strategy document underscoring one of the alliance’s core tenets: an attack on any member of the alliance is an attack on all of them. Iran’s nuclear programme was identified as one of the biggest threats that the 28-nation club could face within the coming decade.

There is a lot to like in this coalition deal stuff that the Labour Government should have attended to long ago: political reform, cracking down on tax avoidance, regulating and taxing the banks, restoring the link between the state pension and earnings, environmental measures.

Lots of my friends and colleagues are concerned, if not downright depressed, by the Conservative Party's ascension to the seat of government. They're also equally, if not more, shocked that Tories did so with the support of the Liberal Democrats. A progressive party, they feel, got into bed with the right-wing nutters that ruined this country. All hope is lost!
But are things really that dire?
