My first thought as I read the negative findings of the Exploring Islam Foundation/YouGov poll about Muslim communities was that I probably wouldn't like me if I had been exposed to the relentless demonisation of British Muslims dished out by the likes of Melanie Philips, Douglas Murray and others on every available media outlet.

I generally avoid reading articles by the extreme right-wing (American, Pakistani or otherwise). My news channel of choice is definitely not Fox News. And I think Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh are ignorant and infuriating bobbleheads. Maybe I should be tuned into the other side of the spectrum, but I prefer not to be angry and indignant on a regular basis.

I feel sick to my stomach.
Today more than 70 people were killed and 108 were injured when gunmen launched simultaneous attacks on two Ahmadi mosques in Lahore. The attacks – involving blasts as well as gunfire – took place during Friday prayers, when “over 1,000 worshipers were present in the mosque.”

British Muslims for Secular Democracy released a guidance booklet for schools at our “Free Muslims: Autonomy and Creativity” conference this year. The aim was to guide teachers through the maze of religious and cultural issues affecting Muslim pupils (which, admittedly, also leave many Muslims feeling confused at the best of times). We have addressed subjects from forced marriages to sex education, from school dress codes to making allowances for Friday prayers.

The most convenient understanding of the phenomenon of Pakistani extremists that one hears being echoed from TV studios suggests that young Pakistanis turning into religious fanatics has something to do with illiteracy and unemployment. Though not entirely incorrect, this notion however is a complacent explanation.

The proceedings at the Deobandi ulema’s recent conference in Lahore must be studied less for its expected refusal to condemn suicide bombings and more for the insight it gives into the psyche of a large section of our powerful ulema community.

Wednesday morning. You walk bleary-eyed to the metro to get to work. The sidewalk is bustling with other morning commuters, a sea of black suits and unfashionable commuter sneakers (you are in Washington, D.C. after all). As you are about to get on the escalator, you grab a copy of the Express, the Washington Post’s free commuter newspaper. This is enough to jolt you awake:
